Perched and ready to serve! These little birds keep watch over your nibbles, adding a chirp of charm to any table. Whether it’s piled high with a roast dinner, a colourful fruit display, or just your favourite snacks — this platter is up to the task. Best of all? A pair of birds perched at either end, acting as sweet and sculptural handles.
WHAT MAKES IT A SECOND...
Let’s just say these birds weren’t the easiest studio guests. One of them took off completely after the glaze firing and had to be (somewhat unceremoniously) reattached with glue — the glaze alone didn’t hold. The glue is secure and there’s no risk of movement, but it is visible underneath the bird and its tail with a yellow-ish tint.
That same bird also has a small raised patch on top where the glaze has lifted, exposing a little bare (though fully fired) clay.
There’s also some minor bobbling in the glaze across the platter surface — purely visual, not affecting use, but part of what makes this piece a little rough around the edges.
And one last thing — the base didn’t dry completely flat, so the middle of the platter has bowed upward slightly. It still functions just fine, but it does have a slight wobble and a bit of a wonky charm.
There’s also a chip in one wing that happened before glazing — so it’s fully glazed, but still visible.
The platter itself is 31cm long, 22cm wide, and stands 3cm tall (6cm including the birds).
It’s still waterproof, but due to the glue and the small area of exposed clay, it should be hand-washed only and fully dried after use.
Reflecting the flaws, it’s been reduced by 80%.
Caring for your pottery:
Marigold and Lettice pottery is made from white earthenware clay and designed to be used and enjoyed every day. We personally use our pieces in the oven, dishwasher, and microwave. However, to prolong the life of your pottery, handwashing is the gentler choice, as dishwashers can be tough on handmade items due to high-pressure jets and strong detergents and may overtime cause damage and speed up any grazing in the glaze.
While we do microwave our own pieces, for longevity we suggest heating food in the oven where possible.
I M P O R T A N T I N F O R M A T I O N
Our china looks and feels very (very) different to mass-produced pottery; it’s not fine or delicate, but wonderfully chunky and full of texture, you’ll see thumb prints, makers marks, glaze specks/drips and heaps of individuality. We call it perfectly imperfect pottery and firmly believe it’s all the better for it!
