We call them our petal bowls, you can call them what you want, but these curved edged bowls have fast become some of our own most used pieces! This style has 12 petals/curved edges which are – of course - deliciously chunky, perfectly-imperfect (we celebrate and cherish these imperfections) and glazed in a glossy white finish.

We call them pasta bowls, but the truth of the matter is that these are perfect for pasta, salad, noodles, curries and well, whatever you want to dish up! They are a great size with a flat bottom base, and it goes without saying – but we will anyway – that they happily go in the oven, dishwasher and microwave.

What makes them a second:

GGGRRRR we love these bowls, but boy they do love to cause me a headache when making them as the clay doesn't always like to hug a curve as it dries and well, these bowls have lots of curves! What this means is that as the bowl dries the clay has a tendency to split a bit in the in those edges - it doesn't mean that it can't be used to the full, but some are a little more deeper than others and as they are visible it means they have become seconds.

In total there are five of them (yes, I told you they cause me a headache) all with their own flaws.

A - no split but drippy glaze can you believe it! Obviously this is just cosmetic but there are patches on the outside where the glaze is thicker and you can still see the pins that I use to hold the piece as I dip it in the glaze.  It's all just a bit more imperfectly imperfect than I'd have wished - reflecting the fault it has been reduced by 25%

B -  OK so to add insult to injury, aka areas of drippy glaze on the outside of the bowl, there are also five small splits in the curves of this dish and one which actually goes through to the other side - and while that sounds dramatic, it's actually fully glazed in and despite it being a crack, it is just a cosmetic fault.  Reflecting the fault it has been reduced by 65%

C -  yet more drippy glaze (a recurring theme on these seconds) on the outside of the bowl, there is also one split within a curve which is gone through to the other side of the rim, and while it is deep enough to have caused a crack, it has been fully glazed in and in no danger of cracking any further. Reflecting the fault it has been reduced by 50%

D - ok so in this dish there are two splits in the curves - one is quite minor and the other is larger which goes through to the inside.  Again, while this sounds dramatic it isn't as bad as it sounds, and is fine to use as normal. Reflecting the fault it has been reduced by 50%

E - while this dish has two splits in the edges/curves - one is quite deep, while both go through to the other side - there is also areas across the inside of the dish where there are some gritty elements that have snuck in during the glazing process.  This effects the texture of the inside of the dish, but no the use of it in any way.  Reflecting the fault it has been reduced by 65%

All dishes are fine to use as normal including going in the dishwasher, oven and microwave.

  • Marigold and Lettice pottery is made to be used, loved and enjoyed; it’s made using sturdy earthenware clay and a thick white glaze. This means it’s hard-wearing and every piece can safely go in the oven, dishwasher, microwave and even the freezer.

Each piece that is made by Marigold and Lettice is totally handmade and a one-off. So, if you see thumb prints in the clay or the glaze that may be thicker in some parts than others, it's because each piece is unique and is what gives our chunky china its specialness, and a different look and feel to mass-produced pottery.

When you first get your chunky china piece you may hear a ‘ping’ - especially the first time the pottery meets with water.  If you do, please don’t worry, it's really quite normal and will stop as soon as the glaze/clay settles down together.  You may also notice that the bottom of every piece is left unglazed, and this may leave a slight residue on your shelves, but can be easily wiped away with a damp cloth.

Like with all china, over time you may also notice signs of use in the glaze, but these are just signs of the china being well-loved. If this is the case, please be assured, the piece will still be perfectly fine to use.
